The music and video here are darker than the picture book and made for adults.

A short work in film, sound, and things left in the earth.

Under a paper moon, the field begins to remember.

Fragments from Mournfield

There is no sound in these fragments. Stay with the small movements.

A graveyard called Mournfield, a narrow strip of ground behind an old road, and a small figure who climbs out of a fresh grave with no name. The only thing on him that came from before is a red thread tied at one wrist, and the far end of it is buried. He goes down to find where it ties.

Twenty leaves, six chapters, one red thread.

The story

Deader than Dead follows a graveyard called Mournfield, a narrow strip of ground behind an old road, and a small figure who climbs out of a fresh grave with no name. The only thing on him that came from before is a red thread tied at one wrist, and the far end of it is buried. He goes down to find where it ties.

At the bottom is a room holding every name Mournfield has ever taken, and his own is among them. He can have it back. Keeping it means keeping all the others, and never leaving the field again. He understands the price and says yes. The ground closes an iron around his ankle, and another one after that.

Deader than dead is not a deeper death. It is what you are once you agree to keep what everyone else forgot.

Mournfield Memory

What the ground
gives back.

Twelve leaves lie face down beneath the moon. When two belong together, Mournfield gives back what it was keeping.

Objects

Things the field
left behind.

After filming ended, a few things were still lying in the grass: a wire crown, a length of red thread, soil sealed inside a coffin-shaped box. We gathered them into small editions, each carrying a trace from Mournfield. When the last piece leaves, Mournfield keeps the rest.

Where can I find Mournfield objects?

The official Mournfield shop is on Etsy. It carries small editions drawn from Deader than Dead: paper moths, red thread, Mournfield moon prints, and the unfinished figure.

The music beneath the field

The music
beneath the field.

The soundtrack follows the long walk through Mournfield: the wind at the fence, the room below the roots, the moment the moon comes into view. Listen in the dark, or carry a piece of the field with you.
