About the author

Thomas Wong

I was born in Hong Kong and moved to Toronto at seventeen. My parents grew up in places where families lost track of their stories and sometimes their names.

That loss does not announce itself. It shows up a generation or two later, in a kid whose real name only gets used at home, a kid who stopped correcting people years ago, or who cannot say what their grandmother did before she arrived.

A lot of us grow up carrying a tag instead of a name. Nobody in my house has ever said that out loud. I watch for it anyway, in the small moments when a child seems unsure whether they belong in the room.

The Unfinished One is my first book, a story about a girl whose name went missing and the transformation she undergoes while searching for where she belongs.
